Healing Through Music

New song released from Knute Nelson therapeutic musician and her former hospice patient

If you know Sara Severson, you’ve probably heard her say that “music heals.” She sees it daily in her work as a therapeutic musician for Knute Nelson Hospice and it was demonstrated perfectly during the time she spent with her patient, Kirk.
Recently during Kirk and Sara’s time together, he shared a melody on his guitar and some lyrics to a new song that was yet to be named. He wanted Sara to continue the work on this song and help bring his vision to life. So, she did.
Sara shared a preliminary recording of the song with Kirk and he reportedly fell in love. He said he could “feel the healing of fearful hearts with melody, strength and love through the song.” He was proud. In turn, so was Sara.
As a musician himself, all that was left was to record Kirk’s unique, gravelly voice to add to the song. They had a date set and couldn’t wait. However, two days before he was set to record, Kirk took his last earthly breath.
Sara wasn’t sure how she could possibly complete this song without her dear friend, Kirk, but with many prayers she realized that Kirk would want her to see it through and bring his vision to life.
The song is called Fly Away. You can listen to it here or watch the video with lyrics.
A message from Sara:
Kirk wanted me to get this out to all of you. He wanted you all to listen to this song, reflect on your life passing by and allow it to bring you peace & healing. He wanted those of you who have lost loved ones to know that you are not alone and that they are up there waiting for the day when you’ll fly away with them too.
Kirk, thank you. Thank you for sharing your soul. Your beautiful wife’s Caryn new friendship. Your amazing gift of music. Your inspiration. Our connection. You. Fly Away my friend. Someday, I Will Too.
