Activities

Living Life to the Fullest

No matter which Knute Nelson community you or your loved one call home, you'll find a multitude of enriching activities and experiences.

Because we get to know each of our residents as people (not just by name), our activities staff are able to dream up fun, interesting and engaging activities that residents not only enjoy but look forward to. We connect people with similar interests and if you’re interested in an activity we don’t offer, our staff will do their best to accommodate your requests.

We offer a variety oIMG_4838.JPGf options to engage the mind and body; residents are free to take part in as many or few as they like.

Mind:

No matter your cognitive ability, activities that stimulate your brain are beneficial. Activities include:

  • Arts and crafts
  • Games and puzzles
  • Reading – alone, in a group or reading to others
  • Music - playing and listening
  • Scenic drives and excursions (apple orchards are big hits!)
  • Cooking and baking
  • Bible study

Body:

Physical activity helps build muscle and maintain muscle strength. It can also work on our balance and that can prevent some falls. We work with residents from where they are. “Active” means something different for each person. Some activities include:

Here are some sample activity schedules to give you a better understanding of how residents are engaged at Knute Nelson.

YMCA Childcare at Knute NelsonIMG_7089.JPG

Beginning in Fall 2018, residents in the Knute Nelson Care Center will be the first participants in the first intergenerational childcare program in Alexandria. They’re in for a real treat!

Each week children from the daycare center next door will join them for activities. Right now, the children are frequent visitors. They use the hallways as an extension of their classroom, singing songs, looking for particular colors and delighting residents.
