Therapeutic Music

"Sometimes music is the medicine patients need the most. They sing along, smile, cry, fall asleep. It’s such a comfort."
                                                            - Sara Severson, Knute Nelson Certified Music Practitioner

What is therapeutic music?

Live music can be like a wonder drug, bringing healing and comfort mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Our Certified Music Practitioner sing, play instruments with groups and one-on-one. Patients and residents often sing along.

How does therapeutic music help?

Music has a dramatic effect. It can:

  • Improve mood
  • Reduce fear and anxiety
  • Reduce pain
  • Relieves stress

It’s especially beneficial for patients with dementia. While they might not remember people or places, they do remember emotions. Singing songs from their past can bring immense joy and help them connect, even if they have trouble speaking.

The vibration of my guitar and voice goes directly from my patient's ears to their brains and throughout their bodies. That vibration provides comfort.
