Massage Therapy

When you think of massage, you might think of long strokes and pressure. For older adults, the technique may be different but the benefits are just as valuable.

How does massage help?

Because older adults’ skin is more delicate, massage therapists use gentle strokes and stretching. Massage can:

  • Relax stiff muscles
  • Reduce pain and swelling
  • Improve circulation, flexibility and muscle tone
  • Improve sleep
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Decrease stress, fear, restlessness and anxiety

Massage has an added benefit. As we age, we often have less physical contact with others. This can lead to feelings of isolation. Massage offsets this by releasing “feel good” hormones like serotonin and endorphins.
