ACTIVE AGING
The Active Aging program is comprised of two classes: Strength and Movement, and Balance and Mobility. These classes focus on exercises and activities that work to keep participants healthy, active and independent.

Active Aging: Strength and Movement is a program designed for aging adults who are physically independent but may still require some assistance with exercises. Classes focus on helping participants improve a base of functional upper and lower body strength, seated balance, weight-bearing balance work, range of motion, flexibility, dexterity and breath work, all necessary for preserving independence.

This ongoing course works to help aging adults maintain and restore their strength. Weakness is the primary reason many seniors enter care facilities; their lapse in strength and movement has decreased their independence. AASM strives to improve each participant’s strength, range of motion, and balance which ultimately allows them to not only remain independent but to increase their stability and improve their overall quality of living.

Active Aging: Balance and Mobility
is focused on helping aging adults maintain and increase their balance, and their ability to move around independently in their everyday lives. The classes include gait stability patterns, standing exercises, balance games, stability balls and other mobility exercises. Those who participate in this will be asked to move without the use of an assistive device.

This ongoing course works to help adults reduce their risk of falls and improve their recovery time following falls. Many aging adults are at risk for falls because of unused lateral muscles, lack of leg strength and ankle strategies, gait instability and a decreased reaction time.
